Gold Coast

From a letter to Cathe
We are loving the Gold Coast - endless tall buildings and yet the tall trees and gardens make it seem really nice. Our building is right on the ocean, four floors up, right at this moment I'm listening to the sounds of waves and if I slightly turn my head to the right I can see the waves rolling into the beach.... its really weird seeing the sun coming up from the beach and not going down behind it in the evening..

(hey, this is good stuff I might use it for a blogpost!)

Went to the big casino last night - had yummy seafood platter for tea (I am being really good still with my diet!) We then went to have a look in the casino, the "high rollers" that we are, we changed our five dollar notes and played til after 11pm. I walked out with my $5, Dave empty handed. I found a Kenny Rogers themed pokie, and it seemed to like me.... the only pokie I understood the concept of... and I don't sem to mind hearing Kenny's music repeated at me.... (who knew?)

Found some absolute bargains at Pacific Fair, the biggest shopping centre I've ever seen, it comes complete with train ride tours, a mini car track, and a jungle themed cafe/restaurant overlooking a little lake with a waterfall and has an elephant (stuffed) outside. I may have to go back again cos I didn't see it all.

Last night we had a massage in our room, it was really good, the company is a Mobile service Dave had a DEEP TISSUE massage that he said was the best (he's still sleeping so it must've been good)
The bloke doing it said he didn't need to go to the gym as it was a workout and a half and was sweating! Mine was a lovely relaxing massage until she found the knots in my shoulder. Were getting them back on Thursday!!

We have a toyota prius for our hire car (Chris Judd has one) its a nifty neat machine, first time Dave drove it and stopped at a set of traffic lights I nearly laughed cos I thought he stalled it - But NO! Its running on a battery type thing and there is no engine noise... so you can hear what other people are saying in their cars n stuff. I'll take some pictures of the interior - its really weird!

Well Davie is now up and we were going to go for a walk/swim on the beach...

So, having a great time here...
will write more later - if I get the time :)
Cheers Rae

A CHRISTMAS TALE…

It was lunch time at the North Pole. Moe and Joe Jingle, two elves from the Nintendo division, slipped outside the toy factory and quietly raced behind the reindeer barn.

“You got it?” Joe asked. Moe pulled out a sheaf of papers and smiled slyly. “Yep,” he said. “Got it.” They huddled together as Moe unfolded the papers.

“So who are we reading about today?” Joe asked anxiously, trying to peer over Moe’s shoulder. Santa had never installed satellite TV at the North Pole, which meant entertainment was mainly limited to watching reindeer games and playing hockey. Joe and Moe were tired of both. So the two had hacked into Santa’s recently computerized “Naughty and Nice” list to read about the lives of the faraway people who awaited the red-suited gentleman’s visit every year.

“Let’s see. Today we’ve got… some folks from Geraldton, in Western Australia,” Moe said.

“Wow! They’ve got sun, surf, seafood and plenty of it there!” Joe said. Joe’s dream was to live in a warmer climate and wear "board-shorts" full time. “I bet this one’s gonna be good.

”Moe’s eyes skimmed the paper. “Sorry. Don’t think so. Doesn't look too exciting."Joe’s face fell. “Well, might as well read it anyway. We don’t have anything better to do.” He leaned against the reindeer barn and stuck his tongue out to catch the snowflakes that had started falling.

“Let’s see,” Moe said. “Dave, Rae, Megsy, Austin, Elisabeth and Oscar are their names. Sounds like they lead a pretty normal life, the cats look like they are generally pretty well behaved and even though the dog Oscar did run away a few time and has a few marks in the Naughty column, he still scraped in an overall Nice rating.”

“What about Dave and Rae?” Joe said. He had moved away from the building and was now leaning this way and that with his tongue out as he manoeuvred to catch the falling snow.

“They’re also on the Nice list.”

“Darn. Nice people are always so boring,” he said

“Well, it’s not all bad. Says here that they went on a pretty nice holiday to Bali, where Dave went surfing while Rae did her little bit for the Balinese economy, they both enjoyed regular massages and generally had a fabulous time together. Sounds like they came home super relaxed. It also says that they are probably going back next year too. Dave's sister Helen is going to get married there next year.”

“Hey, that’s interesting. What else?”

Moe’s eyes continued down the page. “They also plan to go to the Gold Coast before Christmas - Rae's never been before. They are spending Christmas with a huge load of people at the Berrington’s in Mullumbimby - That must be Dave's Sisters family, They are even thinking of checking out a theme park or two while they’re over there .”

“What?!?” Joe yelled, forgetting all about catching snow on his tongue. “I've always wanted to do that!”

“Calm down, calm down,” Moe said, motioning with his hand.

Joe went back to his snowflake catching. ”I guess these people aren’t as boring as I feared.” He leaned his head way back to catch a snowflake and his green elf hat fell into the snow with a soft jingle from the bell on top. “What else?”

“ Well it wasn't all good, Dave's beautiful Grandma, Mabel, passed away and that was a bit of a sad time for them.

“Gee, that’s too bad,” Joe said. He stopped catching snowflakes long enough to look appropriately mournful.

“But it says here that it made them appreciate more the happy times and it seems there's been loads of that – with some of their great friends having babies and some Weddings and engagements announced - it just seems to be all go with these two! Dave's been working from home and is plenty busy, yet still finds time for surfing or golf. Meanwhile Rae has had a good year in her job, she even got asked to work on a couple of special projects which she found challenging and rewarding and she's also volunteering for the Red Cross doing soup patrol.... mmmm soup, I like soup…."

Joe took a break from trying to catch snowflakes and looked at his watch. “Hey, we better get something to eat before we get back to the toy factory. Anything else before we grab some grub?”

Moe skimmed the list. “Well, it also says "Dave is spending a lot of time on the water, he bought a new windsurfer and is having a surfboard "custom-made" just for him, whereas Rae just seems to make do with new shoes. They had a big party for Dave’s birthday this year and that it was a whole load of fun, even a smidge of naughtiness went on, didn’t seem to make it to the list though.

But on the whole it looks like they are doing really well and have a very happy life in that sunny town of Geraldton”

Joe swiped at one more snowflake with his tongue. “Think you can get another file tomorrow?”

“Sure! No problem, I might even see if I can Ben Cousins, his file is bound to be interesting and Santa will never know.” He and Joe turned and headed off to the cafeteria to get lunch.

They never even saw the man in the red suit who was quietly adding two new names to his Naughty list.

we went to Dandaragan and saw... MEATLOAF!

Would you believe it? We also saw the Blues Brothers and some scary crew from the Rocky Horror Show and Mitch!
Actually Mitch wasn't in the show - but he was there!! Colleen was in the show, as you can see, couldn't tell you the significance of the chair.... maybe to fight off Meatloaf ? Anyway it was a blast!
The next day we headed off to the farm and caught up with Johnno and Colleen and the girls and some friends, Dave took the girls for a ute ride out to the paddocks...

I wonder if the bucket came in handy..
Then it was onwards towards home, with a stop via Dongara - where we took this happy snap and promptly lost the dog for twenty minutes.... happy dog.
Also this last week we celebrated Neils Birthday....
We also celebrated our freind Bec and James engagement party - and as our camera broke after taking photos of Neil, we don't have any photos of their party....

New Norcia

Couple of weeks back we went to see our friends Bomber and Lisa. They live out south of New Norcia - it was lovely to see them - especially as Lisa is due with their baby next month....

Bomber took us for a little drive around the property which took about an hour an a half. The boys did typical farmer stuff, and talked typical farmer talk....

I took pictures and enjoyed the scenery.
After we left them for our long trip home we spotted these cool ruins. So instead of driving past them and saying "next time we should stop and have a look at those" like we usually do ..... WE STOPPED!!!I am so glad we did - the day was perfect and the ruins really stood out well against the backdrop of green paddock and blue skies!

Daves Birthday

Its October.... Its Birthday season!
I seem to know a lot of great people who are born in October... amongst the greats are My Mum, two of my best friends, and then
my lovely husband!
For the first time in our nearly six years together we finally had a party for him... Our guests sitting down to dinner
We had lots of friends come along, which made it a fantastic night. But we were also very lucky to have one of Daves good mates from Perth, Mitch, come along also. I think this is also the first time I have ever organised a cake for him... now thats not because I am a mean wife, its just that he gets a fruitcake from Mum every year and that is a much anticipated and appreciated gift... (he loves fruitcake - he made our wedding cake last til about a week before his Birthday)
Ooops 63?? What happened there??? heheh
The party pretty much went on til about 4.30pm (I didn't) I got out of bed then and started kicking them all out, so 5.00am the Birthday boy got to bed, then got up at 7.00am for a game of golf which he apparently did quite well in.

When I got up later, there were still 2 party guests sitting around the fire... guess who one of them was? cough *Mitch* cough He was keeping Marko company (allegedly).

But it was a great party and now a week later we have nearly recovered from it.

Nearly.

Bali's "Kuta Karnival"

We were lucky enough to be in Bali during their 5th annual "Kuta Karnival" a celebration of life, an event that arose after the Bali bombings
Kuta Beach was the place to be, conveniently located opposite our lovely hotel. It was a really busy place, as there were so many activities happening through the week - day and night! Kite competitions, judging size, decoration, and flight height etc.

There were bands playing in concert throughout the whole celebration nonstop (it was a bit full on) they had a big skate ramp set up for anyone with a board to have a go... As you can see in the following clip, there was a definite combination of cultures (or clash)

They were the Hare Krisna's and one of the many many many hardcore bands.

As I said it was the place to be - virtually everyone we saw, were local people.
This team of guys playing - were among several teams playing soccer along the beach. It was pretty cool!
Another day we were trying to find somewhere for lunch, we noticed that they were about to start a parade through Kuta. This photo below is of some of the funky scooters and bikes that started the parade off...

This was one heck of a parade... it lasted all afternoon!!! Through it all, we had lunch, stood and watched a bit of the parade, went and got a massage, watched the parade again for another hour or so, walked home and it was still going!! (It sure beats the Sunshine festival parade we have in Geraldton!)
(nice photo Dave!)

it seemed everyone joined in the fun.

FLOWERS OF BALI

Every single day this big 'ol' wooden bowl would be used to make the most spectacular display of floating flower petals! I was actually around at just the right time to catch this happening.... I never managed to do it again! What a fluke.
Voila! The finished result!
I tried to catch as many of the different designs as I could - but I definitely missed quite a few!

Needless to say they weren't the only gorgeous flowers to be seen!

and finally a petal of another sort......
